Belgium born, living on the road most of the year, love to call Italy as his ‘home’. Passionate about life and living every minute to its fullest. Adores sparkling mineral water and has a big scar on his right foot as a result of a freak skydiving accident.
What really attracts him are the extremes, he has a passion for Hot-Air Ballooning, Skydiving, Extreme Adventure Running: always higher, faster, longer, and ....bolder. His persistence and determination is what separates him from every other dreamer.
Not only holding several pilot licenses, his love for adventure and the ability to participate in extreme sports, makes him a major attribute to adventure and expedition photo shoots. Each human being has a dream that is right for him. I want a life that punches back. I want to discover, to experiment, to go on ahead of the pack, but in a realistic way. I am also pugnacious, stubborn and an incurable optimist. One thing about me is that I focus when I listen, and I learn fast. Above all else, I believe in my LUCky Star, in bravery and personal commitment.
While not hanging around on concerts – by day, maLUCo is photographing underwater, -with an affinity for whales and dolphins-, for his 5 years’ on-going project named ‘Encante’I was privileged to photograph them. I was so exhausted and yet so energized as well.
ViBIN ?? …No, that is not a typo in the title, … It is called… what again? While you sit there pondering how to pronounce the name, it means ‘the general state of enjoying or feeling good about a situation, person, place, or thing. The euphoric buzz you have at that time about something or someone‘. Like for instance the vibe you get while taking photos during a concert. It is war ... beside the fact that the bands think you are annoying; you have thousands of charged up fans, either intoxicated, high or both, behind you. The security staff hates you, because you are in their way. The crowd is jealous of you. Crowd surfers will repeatedly kick you in the head and bump your arms and shoulders as you attempt to take a shot. That sensation, that adrenaline rush.... is what ViBIN is all about.
I have started ViBIN as an experimental creative platform, to showcase my work to the fans of music and photography, to create something that burns on your retina. While I have created my own style when it comes to Live Concert Photography, the shooting and the approach is to capture something the audience was feeling during the gig. Concert- culture- photography as art, where the audience has a roll into it , yes ... you, the public, are a part of the evening too.
’Encantado’ -enchanted one-, a word roughly translated in Brazilian/Portuguese. It is used for creatures that come from a paradisiacal underwater realm called the Encante. Amazon River People speak very often of the Encante -an enhanced city beneath the water-, ruled by Encantados. Those who visit the Encante never want to leave, because ... everything is more beautiful there
Encante is a photo pilgrimage across the world’s 5 oceans, 5 seas and 1 river to explore the lives of whales, dolphins and porpoises. A journey looking for answers I do not even know the questions for... shedding a focus on the mysteries of these animals and their struggles for survival in a rapidly changing world...Values-Focus-Hear-Feel-Believe-Immerse-Escape-Understand-Rebirth-Share ...
Everyone spends the first nine months of life in the water. The lucky ones make frequent return visits.
ViBIN
Dedicated to the Dutch Rock ‘n Roll musician -Herman Brood–. ViBIN is an on-going project - on a Live concert photo book -to show case a selection of photographs taken during live concerts in Europe and/or from various artists. The profits of the book will support and contribute upcoming artists and bring new music to life. The book will include, handwritten comments by artists, their managers, organizers, the public ... accompanying the photographs. It will take a little adjustment to read my scribbles, but the effort is worthwhile. These comments could be gossip, maybe at times informative and at times lightweight nonsense. You have to make your own way through it all; the book is spaciously designed and is made with love.
HERMAN BROOD:
Back to the beginning of my photographic journey, when I was 12 years old, I won a photo contest, a book of Herman Brood with his photos and paintings. From that moment, his music and I have had a wild romance, and still is one hell... of a roller coaster ride. Ironically, a few years later, I ‘met’ Herman laying on a street in Terneuzen (NL), he collapsed after a cocktail of booze and speed. While I assisted him to sit straight up, he looked at me - as if he wanted to say ‘thank you my friend‘- .
July 11th, 2011 - when his death was announced all over the radio and TV-, I still remember where I was and with whom I was. When U2 performed in the Netherlands three weeks after Brood’s suicide, they paid tribute to him at each of their three shows. At the third show in Arnhem they also dedicated their own song “Gone“ to Herman and performed Brood’s version of “My Way”. In the middle of the show Bono delivered an emotional eulogy to Brood.
I have never experienced such an emotional reaction to his death. His life, music and paintings manifested themselves onto my soul, into my veins and gave me the feeling they would be with me for the rest of my life.
To Herman, a musician, Rock ‘n Roll junkie, artist, ‘enfant terrible’ and a huge-huge personality.
Let’s be honest, we all on our time, we always wanted to be Herman Brood.
Suicide note left behind by Herman Brood, July 11th, 2001:
I’ve had enough; maybe I’ll be seeing you around. Make it a great party.
